Things That Exist That Shouldn’t: Yo Gabba Gabba

Today I went with the Mrs. to visit one of her friends. Her friend had a couple of young children and they were watching Yo Gabba Gabba. I have briefly glimpsed at the show before but had never really paid much attention to it. I sat and watched an entire episode and have been left almost completely speechless by what I had witnessed. It is like Tim and Eric made a show for children, which is something that they should either never do or start work on immediately, I’m not quite sure which yet.

If you haven’t seen an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba, either because you don’t have kids or you don’t ingest massive quantities of LSD on a regular basis I will give you a quick run down of the show.

The show starts off with a slim African American Fellow in a tight bright orange jumpsuit and fuzzy hat, his name is DJ Lance. He carries around a giant boombox that has some creepy looking toys in it.

DJ Lance is a total pimp

He sets the toys down in what kind of looks like a large puppet theater, then they come to life as people in costumes.

One of them kind of looks like a big prickly red dildo with arms and legs.

Gives a new meaning to the phrase "one eyed monster". (One eyed monster is a term some gentlemen use in reference to their penis)

There are 5 of these things in all, one of them is some sort of furry green monster with a uni-brow, there’s also a yellow robot, a thing that kind of looks like a yeti, and one that reminds me of a female version of Grimace from McDonalds.

Now this is the kind of shit that I can get into

Here’s where it gets weird:

The show is full of weird songs, awkward celebrity guest appearances (the episode I saw had Jack Black in it), and there’s tons of hallucination invoking nonsense that doesn’t make any sense. I literally could not look away the entire episode, I know there are people out there that get high/drunk while watching this show which is totally something I would suggest doing. There’s also random segments thrown in where there are real kids that dance awkwardly for 20 seconds while a sound clip plays that says “My name is ___ and I like to dance” most of the kids are Asian.

An awesome clip from The Soup

Another weird clip from Yo Gabba Gabba with rapper/actor Mos Def dressed up like a superhero, at one point someone in a giant sperm costume runs across the screen crying. Seriously, how is this shit on Nickelodeon Jr.?
